Phyllis Johnson Obituary

Mother Phyllis Irene Johnson (also known as Aunt Dump) was born to the late William “Sonny” Jackson and Gertrude Martin Nelson on April 8, 1941 in Beebe, Arkansas.

Phyllis was the eldest daughter and matriarch of her family. She loved gardening and cooking and took pride in feeding her family as well as those who graced her door. She was known for tasty dishes and quick wit. Even in the late stages of her life, she usually got the last word and kept others laughing out loud.

Phyllis professed a faith in Christ and was a faithful member of the Mount Arratt Baptist Church where Rev. Otto Jones was her pastor. She was an active member of the Mission and Usher’s Board. She remained loyal to the church until her health failed.

Phyllis graduated from the White County Training School and received Vocational Training at Foothills in Searcy, Arkansas. She was employed by Anderson Restaurant and Land O’ Frost before taking an early retirement due to health related reasons.

In 1959, Phyllis married Sam Q Johnson. Six children were born to their union, Victoria, Dorene, Sam Jr., Phil, Don, and Jennifer. Left to cherish her memory are daughter, Dorene Johnson Mellon (Robert) of Beebe, Arkansas; three sons, Sam Q. Johnson Jr. and Phil A. Johnson of Searcy, Arkansas, and Donald W. Johnson of Beebe, Arkansas; two bonus sons, Reggie Johnson (Renita) and Lamont Johnson (Michelle) of Little Rock, Arkansas; a son-in-law, Rodney Bass of Scott, Arkansas; two sisters, Clara Saxton (Jerry) of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Patsy Nelson of Beebe, Arkansas; five brothers,  Garland Nelson (Deborah) of North Little Rock, Arkansas, Virgil Nelson and Eric Nelson of Beebe, Arkansas, Larry Joe Nelson (Marites) of Los Vegas, Nevada, and O.H. Jackson of Little Rock, Arkansas; twelve grandchildren, Jarvis Lowe (Melissa), Breeze Mellon (Whitney), Nate Johnson, Paige Johnson, Lamont Offord, R.J. Bass, Mahalia Bass, Peyton Bass, Keleigh Johnson, Tasha Johnson, Jacqueline Valentine, Natalie Johnson; great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Phyllis was proceeded in death by her parents, Sonny Jackson and Gertrude Nelson; husband, Sam Q Johnson; two daughters, Victoria Johnson and Jennifer Johnson Bass; three brothers, O.C. Jackson, Bobby Jackson, and David Nelson; and one sister, Bernice Bradley.
